Pardon my ignorance, but I’m slightly confused about these health screenings work has us go through for a discount on health insurance. At all my previous jobs, all I needed was a physical w my family doctor and a voucher with her signature to give HR. This semi-new job of mine requires us to go to a particular lab and fill out a particular survey despite having my yearly physical with my family physician. Is this normal and what’s the reason? Think it’s strange that I have to go to a clinic of their choice. Not complaining, just curious. Perhaps it’s more common than I think?
My current and previous company requires heath screening to receive a discount on health premiums.
IDK if it is because they are both self insured and preventative care can save a lot of healthcare costs in the long run.
If you are in the US, this is legal as long as it’s optional to you.
It’s likely more common than you think. The two big clinical lab chains and some large health insurers that run urgent care clinics offer annual health screenings for employees. I don’t know the specifics, but getting screened this way probably costs less than paying for a doctor’s office visit.
You probably don’t have to go to their clinic. There should be an option for your PCP to order the same labs and also fill out the results.
Each employer can decide to offer premium discounts for wellness participation if they want to. They also set the requirements you need to meet to get that discount.
It’s optional, so it’s your choice whether to complete the required tasks with the chosen vendors.
If you’re unhappy with how the wellness premium credits are set up, you should talk to your HR. Most of my clients don’t offer a wellness premium credit, but a few do. One client only requires an annual physical with their chosen PCP, while another requires four preventive screenings, annual physicals, or dental or vision checks to get the credit for the following year.
