Provider Just Billed Me for a Free COVID Test from FOUR YEARS AGO

Hey…I just received a bill for a COVID test that I took back in 2020. I thought these tests were supposed to be free, as insurance was required to cover them at the time. Now, 48 months later, I’m getting charged $100.

I know Anthem paid for this test back then, but I accidentally threw away my Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) and can’t access my online account anymore because I switched insurance providers. I thought Anthem would keep my account active for past claims, but I guess I was wrong.

This situation is so annoying! What should I do next? Should I contact the provider, Anthem, or both? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi meg,try this If the issues persist, consider consulting a consumer protection attorney or contacting your state’s attorney general’s office.

Call Anthem and ask for a copy of the EOB. I just had to do this for my FIL. A medical group sent him to collections for not paying a bill. He didn’t pay because his EOB showed a $0 patient responsibility. He no longer has that plan. But I was able to call and ask BCBS to send a copy. They did, and I was able to dispute the collection and show that it’s invalid.
