My mother works as a house cleaner and does not have the necessary health insurance. If she does not reside with me, is it still feasible to add her to the health insurance plan that my work sponsors? Is it possible to get past this? I am not sure how else to get her health insurance, therefore she needs it.
You cannot add a parent, sorry. But if she fulfils the minimal income threshold, she can get a plan through healthcare.gov. Medicare if you’re older than 65.
If Medicaid was extended to adults, she might be eligible, depending on her state.
She would be able to purchase insurance through the marketplace in your state with a sizable premium subsidy if her income is low but too high for Medicaid.
In the event that she lacks documentation, Medicaid coverage is available in both New York and California.
You cannot add her, sorry. She’ll have to purchase it from the store. Regardless of her immigration status, she might be able to get medical care if she resides in California. Best of luck
Tracy, I appreciate the information. It’s helpful to know that, depending on the state, Medicaid coverage may be a possibility. If her income qualifies her for Medicaid but is too high, I’ll look into the marketplace for insurance with premium subsidies. Thank you also for bringing up the fact that Medicaid coverage is available for people without papers in New York and California. This is very beneficial!
Sam, I appreciate your clarification. If she makes the minimum income requirement, I’ll check into plans on healthcare.gov. When she becomes 65, we’ll think about Medicare. Thank you for the advice!
I appreciate your knowledge, Brandy. I know she can’t be included, so we’ll try buying it separately. It’s encouraging to hear that, notwithstanding her immigration status, California might provide healthcare. Thank you for the kind words!
