We recently had a baby, and my company provides us with private insurance. Due to the need to monitor both her and the baby, my wife had to be admitted to the hospital while using a Vera Previa. We have to pay $8k out of pocket (family). My spouse has already spent her $4k limit. Our estimate, including delivery, is about $150k. My spouse spent three weeks there. Is this a challenging circumstance, or am I overthinking it?
When my family faced a similar situation, with unexpected hospital expenses and high out-of-pocket costs, it was definitely overwhelming. We had to deal with significant medical bills for my spouse’s extended hospital stay, and even with insurance, the costs added up quickly. The $8k out-of-pocket expense you mentioned, especially after reaching a $4k limit, coupled with the overall estimate of $150k, can indeed be challenging. It’s not uncommon for such medical situations to strain finances, and it’s important to review your insurance coverage thoroughly and explore any available financial assistance or payment plans with the hospital. Seeking advice from a financial counselor or patient advocate could also help manage these expenses more effectively.
If you have “real” health insurance through your employer, you should be covered for all amounts over the out-of-pocket maximum if the hospital is in the network. However, you won’t know the exact bill until you receive your EOB. If the amount is not capped at $8000, you will have information.
