In Washington State, we have private health insurance through Premera Blue Cross. We want to live in each location for half of the time after purchasing a second house in California. We discovered that we are only covered in Washington by our plan. Only emergency room care is covered in California. Does a health plan span two states? or all states, for that matter? What makes full-time RVers successful?
I work for them but don’t manage that line of business. There are other plans available, but I can’t provide details as it goes against the rules, and I’m not familiar with that department. PPO plans are offered by Premera (BC of WA), Regence (BS of WA), Anthem BC of CA, and CA BS. These plans use the Bluecard network, allowing access to regular services. For instance, Premera offers the Peak Care EPO, which provides coverage only in the Spokane area, except for emergencies. To clarify, I’m only knowledgeable about group plans, and the two national accounts I handle don’t include that option.
Verify with your Premera Blue Cross policy or contact them to see if they are part of the BlueCard Program. This program enables Blue Cross and Blue Shield patients to access additional networks of physicians and hospitals established by other BCBS plans.
If your state doesn’t provide PPO plans on the marketplace (which is the case in most states), you have two main options: cancel your plan in one state and enroll in a new plan when you move, or choose an ACA plan for where you spend the most time and either pay out of pocket while traveling or purchase a supplemental PPO for emergencies. Essentially, this is the purpose of those non-ACA plans that agents often promote, rather than offering them as comprehensive solutions as many agents do.
