Does Medicaid really take 45 days or longer to get approved?

When I applied, I got a notification saying I was approved and let me pick a plan. However, my status now says, ‘state agency to contact you.’ They mention it could take about 45 days, but does it always take that long? I have medical issues that I can’t address without insurance.

Call them every couple of weeks. My partner waited the full 45 days, even though I kept suggesting they check in sooner. When they finally called, they found out the agency needed more proof of income. Because they waited too long, they had to reapply, which delayed everything. Once they resubmitted, it only took about two weeks to get approved. Sometimes the systems don’t sync properly, so it’s worth checking in.

Yeah, it can take a while. When I applied a few years ago, I waited more than two months before hearing back.

That’s frustrating. I’m on unemployment, so I thought it might go faster since all my info is easy to verify. A friend of mine got their Medicaid cards in three weeks, so I’m hoping for the same luck.

It really varies. I’ve seen it happen in three weeks, but I’ve also seen it take three months. In Tennessee, it’s usually around a month.

@Hadden
When I applied pre-COVID, I had coverage within two weeks. It might be different now.

Did they give you a contact number? I’d recommend calling them instead of waiting for them to reach out. Most Medicaid offices want to make sure you get coverage. You can also upload documents directly to their website if you have access.

It depends on the situation. Sometimes it can be fast-tracked if there’s an emergency. For example, if someone without insurance ends up in the ER, social workers can help them apply for Medicaid on the spot. It’s not something you should fake, but if you’re in a worst-case scenario, go to the ER and don’t let your Medicaid status stop you.

If you have urgent medical needs, ask your provider to write a letter requesting they speed up your application.

Reach out to your state representative if it’s urgent. My rep helped get my son’s Medicaid approved in just 24 hours.

Thanks for the advice. I just sent them an email.

Good luck. If your state rep doesn’t help, try contacting your state senator. Some are more willing to assist than others.

@Milo
Can I upload documents from my phone, or do I need a computer? I should probably upload my unemployment wages, ID, and Social Security info, but I didn’t see the option on my phone.

For most states, Medicaid has at least 30 days to process the application, with an additional 90-day period to resolve any documentation or interview requirements. Keep calling and following up. Sometimes working with a professional advocate can also help move things along.

I applied for Medicaid in Wyoming back in May, and it’s now July. Still waiting on approval.
