Dermatologist with BCBS - experiences?

Hello guys, I would like to schedule a visit with a dermatologist for a basic skin wellness check and advice on acne. I currently have BCBS Focus, but I will shortly be moving to Basic. Nevertheless, I cannot locate any reference to dermatology coverage in the BCBS literature.

Does anyone here have any experience treating dermatological with BCBS?

With BCBS Focus, you pay $10 for each of your first 10 visits to providers. After that, you’re responsible for 30% coinsurance and a $500 deductible. If you use out-of-network providers, you will have to cover all the charges yourself.

I’m on the Basic plan and haven’t had any issues. I saw a few dermatologists, and the copay was around $35. The only problem I encountered was needing prior approval for tretinoin, since I’m over 35 and they were concerned it might be for anti-aging.

The bigger challenge is actually getting an appointment with a dermatologist. You should book now and hope to get in by July. Be prepared to see a PA instead of a doctor.

Isn’t that the truth? I’ve experienced the same thing for the past 20 years with various health insurance providers. Since they handle both elective and non-elective procedures, their schedules get filled up quickly. Once you’re an established patient, it’s generally easier to get an appointment, but securing that first one can be challenging.

I’ve been seeing the same dermatologist for nearly a decade. If they’re in-network, your copay for an office visit with Basic is typically $30-40.

I’ve also had some liquid nitrogen treatments covered. The office initially tried to charge me at the time of the visit, but I asked them to wait for insurance to respond, and they were surprised when it was covered. They might bill you separately for ‘treatment,’ but it should be covered by insurance.

Over the years, I’ve had a few moles removed and biopsied, which costs about $100 out of pocket each time. It’s annoying, but it’s worth it for the peace of mind. As an Irish resident in Colorado, where melanoma risk is high, it’s crucial to stay vigilant about skincare.

A dermatologist is classified as a specialist, so you’ll need to refer to your specialist benefits for coverage details.
