Can I Get Diagnostic Testing Done Twice with Two Different Approved Authorizations?

Hey everyone,

I’m in a bit of a unique situation and could use some advice.

My doctor put in authorizations for some diagnostic testing with two different specialists, one in town and one out of town. Initially, I thought they were going to try the out-of-town specialist first and then the in-town one if the first was denied. However, they forgot about it for 2.5 weeks, so it seems they sent both requests at the same time because it’s somewhat time-sensitive.

Anyway, I just got the authorizations back, and both were approved. So now I have two different doctors, both approved to do the same diagnostic tests.
Since both authorizations are approved, can I go to both doctors and have the diagnostic tests done twice? Is there any issue with getting the same tests done by two different specialists?

Yes, you can technically get the same tests done twice if both authorizations are approved, but it’s best to check with your insurance and your doctors. They can help ensure it’s necessary and avoid any extra costs or confusion.

To be sure I have understood your question, you are asking whether you can have the same diagnostic tests done except by different doctors.

You cannot be reimbursed or covered for the second one since it would not be deemed to be medically necessary.

The only way to get the second one to be covered would be if you had the first series done and there was something in the tests that indicated it was medically necessary to have additional tests or have the initial series redone.
