Can I Add My Newborn To My Health Insurance Without a Birth Certificate?

Literally the title. I have health insurance thru my husband’s insurance. I’m having a Citizenship interview 3 days after my due date. My name change should be approved during that interview so I want to wait maybe a month or two before I file Birth Certificate for my newborn so that I can put my new legal name on her Birth Certificate. I wonder how do I add my newborn to my health insurance without her birth certificate? I assume I only have 30 days to add her.

What do you mean by ‘new legal name’? Are you taking your husband’s last name?

If it’s just a last name change, there’s no reason to wait. My maiden name had to go on my kids’ birth certificates, even though I’ve been married and using my husband’s last name for 9 years

Yep, my mom’s maiden name is on mine. It’s whatever your legal name at birth was.

Your birth name usually goes on the birth certificate regardless. Waiting seems unnecessary and could cause issues.

Oh really? So even if I have a legal first name change, I am still required to put my birth name on my child’s birth certificate?

Not sure. But I honestly wouldn’t wait. The certificate is that important and having your old name on it won’t change anything.

Also,I didn’t realize you immigeation could legally change your name (assuming you’re in the States). Usually you have to go to court for a legal name change other than the usual change you can make when you marry.

I’m changing my first name during my citizenship interview. So I am worried if my first name will be different on my child’s birth certificate, will it cause lots of hassle.
