Aetna not covering iud

Hi, I got my iud from planned parenthood in January (January 5th). I went to them, showed them my health insurance card and confirmed with them that my card covers the iud. 10 days later I had to go back because my IUD was botched (it expelled within a day). I come back and explain to them it is an emergency and I’m in a lot of physical pain. Once again I confirm with them that my insurance (Aetna) covers the iud. Fast forward to today, almost 9 months later I got an email saying I owe my insurance 1.2k. This came out of nowhere. I check the statement and the statement was sent on 8/28/24, but I got the email only today. I’m a college student who can not pay at all. I did everything that was necessary to ensure I wouldn’t have to pay. I feel so defeated because of how hard it was to get my iud (getting it inserted twice in less than 2 weeks because of the mistakes of planned parenthood). I plan on calling my insurance tomorrow as soon as I wake up. What else should I do? Important info regarding insurance: Aetna open access plan, (family insurance by employer) I’m 20, from NYC

Review the claim details with Aetna by date of service and provider. Your EOB confirms the paid claim details, and you should never pay the provider more than what the EOB shows you owe.

I see I will do that soon. Thank you

What does the EOB from Aetna say? Can you upload a redacted image of it?

My guess is they covered the first one without issue, but PP may have billed Aetna for the second IUD without the right diagnosis code or explanation that the first one was botched, and a new one was needed.

They might be denying it because they don’t see a reason for needing two IUDs in two weeks. PP should call Aetna, explain the situation, and correct the diagnosis code if that’s the reason for the denial. It still depends on what your EOB says.

It didn’t cover the initial IUD or the visit for the botched visit?

Did you confirm they cover that specific brand of IUD or just IUDs in general? And did they repair the existing one or give you a new one?

My first guess is they don’t cover that brand. But if they just repaired the existing one, they shouldn’t charge for a whole new, non-covered device. That’s what I’d bring up with the billing department. They might be able to correct the coding if this is the issue.

They said all the iuds are covered by my insurance, I made them check on their computers. I had to get a new iud.

Along with checking your EOBs, call Planned Parenthood to ask about a payment plan or financial aid. Stay in touch with them so they don’t send the bill to collections.
