Adult Dependent Children - California

My 22 year old son was offered a full-time benefited position, including health insurance. I know in California adult dependdent children can stay on their parent’s plan till the age of 26, but does his ability to receive health insurance through his employer mean he HAS to be removed from mine? Or does the age provision still hold, even with his benefitted position?

They can stay on until age 26, no exceptions. They can have dual coverage, but they need to inform both insurance carriers and complete a coordination of benefits form for each. In this case, their employer’s insurance will be the primary coverage, and your insurance, since they are a dependent, will be secondary.

Thank you. If it’s the same provider for both, say Kaiser, is there any benefit in having dual coverage?

In my personal experience, dual coverage can be a bit of a headache. I tend to recommend it only when the secondary insurer is Medicaid.

Probably no benefit.

What if Amy are premium costs and is there a different in the actual benefits.

Like Chicken, I think dual coverage is generally more of a headache than a benefit for many people unless they want to make sure everything is properly done and are willing to spend time and energy to do it.

There’s no out of pocket costs for me to insure him through my work. That being the case I don’t think there’s a good reason for me to take him off of mine until I have to, especially if he would have out of pocket costs.

In that case, you might as well keep him on the plan since it works for you.

If he adds the employer plan, it will become the primary, and yours will be secondary.

You’d need to handle the admin side carefully. No disrespect to your child, but when I was in my 20s, I wasn’t great at making sure things like this were done right.

100% agreed. Both my adult kids are dumba$$es…I say that in the most loving, fatherly way possible!
