A good plan for health insurance

Currently I don’t have health insurance because I felt it was too expensive and it wasn’t really covering the health benefits I really need. I used to pay $400 a month. I’m looking for a coverage that covers mental health sessions, medical massages and chiropractors. Given my lifestyle and today’s world if you’re not able to get these as an essential then we are all kidding ourselves. Is there a way to get these covered? Any recommendations for a good affordable plan that covers these things on a regular basis? because I felt it was too expensive and it wasn’t really covering the health benefits I really need. If you read through the posts here, you’ll see many people who thought they could save money by skipping insurance. Next thing they know, they owe $17,000 to an ER (a real post from yesterday!) or they get cancer (posts every day) or something else happens. Then they come here asking what they can do now (answer: not much).

No one thinks it will happen to them. But unless you’re a multi-millionaire who can afford major surgery on your own, most of us need insurance.

What’s your income? This will dictate what is and isn’t affordable under ACA guidelines.

Thanks—this is helpful.

You have two main options: wait until November 1 when the New York State of Health’s open enrollment starts (similar to the Federal Marketplace, healthcare.gov) or look for non-ACA private insurance options.

ACA plans must cover essential health benefits (EHBs). You can check these benefits here: Find out what Marketplace health insurance plans cover

Coverage for things like chiropractic care or medical massages may vary, but don’t count on them being included. Health insurance is a financial tool to manage risk, and not having insurance leaves you exposed.

For reference, at $400 a month with a $67 annual income, your premiums are about 7.38% of your gross income. This falls within affordability metrics, meaning this premium amount is considered affordable.

Thank this is really helpful. I was able to manage with the premiums last year but I think everything is getting too expensive. I’m just holding off till I make sure it is absolutely necessary for me to pay a certain amount. Just looking for the best option here.
