When dealing with DME (Durable Medical Equipment) authorizations, who submits the request to the insurance company? Does the provider send the authorization to the DME vendor, and the vendor submits it to the insurance company?
From my experience in family medicine, the DME vendor usually starts the prior authorization process. We send the office notes with the order to the DME vendor. If they need more information, they’ll reach out to us for it. We don’t deal directly with the insurance side.

Usually, the DME company handles the prior authorization. If they need medical records, they’ll contact the provider’s office to get them.
