Hello…I’m 25 and have insurance through my employer, but it’s proving to be quite problematic. My gynecologist found something and has recommended a mammogram. Unfortunately, my insurance has a high $8k deductible and won’t cover the cost of the exam. I’ve been quoted $1.8k out of pocket for what should be a routine exam, but since I’m young, it’s not considered routine.
I’m feeling frustrated with the system and overwhelmed by the cost. How is this the reality we face? Is there any advice on how to handle this situation, or alternatives I might not be aware of?
My advice: Consider Community Health Clinics: Some community health centers or non-profit organizations offer free or low-cost mammograms, especially for those underinsured or without coverage. The National Breast Cancer Foundation and similar groups can sometimes help connect you with resources.
I’ve been in a similar situation, and it’s definitely tough. One thing I did was ask the hospital if they had a cash-pay rate or discount for paying out-of-pocket. They sometimes reduce the cost significantly if you’re not going through insurance.
