Is dermatology covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance?

I made an appointment for my fiancé to see a skin doctor because he has a strange mole under his arm. The person at the doctor’s office couldn’t tell me if his insurance pays for the visit, and I can’t find anything in the handbook about whether dermatology is covered. Does anyone know if visits like this are covered, and if treatment for the mole would be covered too?

Thanks!

Hello! @Barbara, Coverage for dermatologist visits varies widely depending on the insurance plan. In general, a visit that is regarded medically necessary, such as one for a worrisome mole, is more likely to be covered. For the most precise information, I recommend reviewing the insurance policy’s provisions about expert visits or contacting the insurance company directly. They should be able to provide detailed information on coverage for both the visit and any proposed treatment. It’s also a good idea to ask the dermatologist’s office if they can help you check insurance coverage.

When I noticed a suspicious mole on my partner’s back, I scheduled an appointment with a dermatologist, but I was also uncertain about our insurance coverage. The doctor’s office wasn’t able to confirm the details either, so I called our insurance provider directly. They informed me that coverage often depends on the specific policy and whether the visit is deemed medically necessary

In our case, because the mole was potentially dangerous, the consultation was covered under preventive care. Any subsequent treatments or procedures were also covered, but subject to our plan’s deductibles and co-pays. It’s worth checking with the insurance provider directly, as they can give a definitive answer based on your specific policy, and they might classify the visit as preventive care, which is typically covered.
