I’m looking into the health insurance options for CMU faculty and staff. The 2025 plans seem updated, and I’m not sure which one to apply for yet. Has anyone gone through the application process recently? Any tips?
I applied last year for the HDHP plan with an HSA. It’s pretty straightforward, but make sure you check the wellness incentives too—they can really add up.

Those wellness rewards are a nice bonus. Do you know if there’s a specific deadline to apply?
@Marley
I think the deadline depends on when you’re hired. For current employees, it’s usually at the start of the benefits period.
I’m considering the OAP 350 plan for next year. Anyone know if it covers preventive care without out-of-pocket costs?

Yes, preventive care is included without additional costs. That’s one of the main reasons I stuck with it last year.

Same here. It’s a great plan if you don’t have high medical expenses throughout the year.
Can someone explain how the HSA works with the HDHP plan? I’ve heard it’s good for saving money but don’t really get it.

The HSA lets you set aside pre-tax money for medical expenses. It’s especially useful if you don’t use much healthcare and can roll over the savings each year.

Also, the contributions you make to the HSA can lower your taxable income, which is a nice perk!
Has anyone tried switching plans mid-year? I want to change to the OAPIN 1250 but don’t know if it’s allowed.

I don’t think mid-year changes are allowed unless it’s due to a qualifying life event, like marriage or having a child.

Yeah, that’s correct. They’re pretty strict about sticking to the open enrollment period.
