Hello guys,
I’ve been on my spouse’s insurance plan since the beginning of the year. I lost my own coverage over a year ago. I went to the doctor in May but didn’t have my insurance card, so I sent the claim to my insurance earlier this month.
Now, I got a letter asking me to update my records about other healthcare coverage. I answered that I haven’t had any other benefits in the last 12 months.
But they’re asking for the date when COB (Coordination of Benefits) is effective, and I’m not sure how to answer since we only have one policy, so no COB.
I’m just worried about answering wrong and having my claim denied.
First, is there an option to say “N/A” for the COB information? If not, try calling your insurance and tell them, “I don’t have any other insurance. I got a letter asking for a start date, but I can’t provide one because I don’t have other coverage.”
I’d need to see how the letter is set up to give a better answer, so I apologize if this isn’t specific enough. Which insurance company is it? Maybe I can find more information for you.
No it has to be a date format. I’m trying to submit it online. It’s through summacare. I’ll reply again with a screenshot of what I’m trying to fill out
That’s terrible form design by SummaCare. I’d call them to find out what you need to do with it. Make sure to write down the name of the person you speak with and possibly get a reference number. Reps can sometimes give wrong info, and if any claims are denied because of COB, you’ll have something to back you up. Let me know what they say, I’m curious.
They said this issue keeps coming up, and then they just asked if I had other coverage or Medicaid. I said no, and they told me they’d update it for me within 3 business days.
So, I think it’s just a website or format problem.
I’m really relieved, lol. Thanks again—your confirmation that it was an unanswerable question really helped ease my anxiety.
Don’t worry if you get a denial for a claim or two later on. Just call back and ask them to reprocess it because it was missed when COB was updated. I worked at Summa for over 8 years and used to run a macro to automatically reprocess them all. Sometimes, the program didn’t catch all the claims.
Call and tell insurance representative the date that your coverage ended. You should have received a letter from your former carrier stating when your coverage ended.
