I am hoping this is the appropriate sub to ask about. I am looking for my first full-time career as I am about to graduate from college. A position has been given to me where United Healthcare is the insurance company. I utilize health insurance heavily due to my disability, therefore it is one of my top concerns when looking for a job. Thus, I would like to know about your experiences using United Healthcare. How the prescription benefits work is the main question I have. Right now, my family’s Blue Cross Blue Shield plan ($6,000 individual, $13,000 family deductible) is mediocre at best.
Understanding UnitedHealthcare Prescription Benefits:
Plan Specificity: UnitedHealthcare (UHC) offers various employer-sponsored health plans, each with different prescription drug coverage. The specific details of your prescription benefits depend on the plan chosen by your employer.
Prescription Drug Lists (PDLs): UHC uses a tiered system, often called a formulary, for prescription coverage. Medications are categorized into tiers based on cost. Tier 1 medications are typically generic drugs with the lowest copay or coinsurance, while higher tiers (such as specialty drugs) come with higher costs.
UHC Website: You can find resources on the UHC website to help understand your prescription benefits. This information is usually accessible through your employer’s UHC benefits portal or directly on the UHC website. Here’s a link to get you started: UHC Pharmacy Benefits.
Steps to Learn More About Your UHC Plan:
Review Job Posting or Benefits Information: Check the job posting or benefits information for details about the specific UHC plan, or for a website link where more information is available.
Contact the Employer: If the information isn’t clear, reach out to the HR contact at the company to inquire about the specific UHC plan details, including prescription drug coverage.
Use the UHC Benefits Lookup Tool: If you have basic information about the plan (such as the employer name or plan name), you might be able to use the UHC benefits lookup tool to find specific details: UHC Benefits Lookup Tool.
For a full year, my wife and son were on UHC. It was the worst insurance-related experience I’ve ever had. They refuted all of it. They would finally pay the claim, but it would take us hours to speak with them on the phone. In order to get the state insurance commissioner to pay for an ER visit, we had to intervene. They eventually paid it, but six months later they changed their minds. Once more, we battled it for months before they finally paid.
I detest this organization, and I would seriously consider looking for another work if my employer were to go with them.
Right now, I’m having the same problem—my claims are all being denied. Which phone number should I dial? The call center representative I spoke with on my first call was incomprehensible and spoke very little English.
I’m currently receiving thousands of dollars in bills for normal blood work.
My spouse and son were on UHC for a year. It was the worst insurance experience I’d ever experienced. They denied everything.
I am employed in hospital utilization management. In my experience, United Healthcare has been the most challenging payor to work with, by far. Based on my personal experiences, I have observed a consistent pattern of bad faith denials for medically necessary services. I have no intention of using them.
