How is California vs Texas health insurance?

I’m living in Texas and self employed. The health insurance in TX is super expensive and only allow small business to have PPO. I heard California state allow PPO even for individual and cheaper insurance, true ? Especially for my case who’s 56, insurance is important. Thanks

Yes, I might be a bit biased as a Californian, but we do get Texas expats who move here for the healthcare! Just kidding… mostly.

Go to CoveredCA.com and search for PPO plans in the county where you’re moving. In our area, two companies offer them, and they are very expensive unless you qualify for subsidies.

Texas is one of the most expensive states for health insurance. I’m not licensed in California, so I don’t know much about the market there, but Texas is usually on the high end for prices among the states I work in.

Texas doesn’t offer PPOs through the ACA. They are only available through employers or on the private market. If you choose a private plan, be cautious because it likely won’t be ACA compliant. I wouldn’t recommend it if you have any pre-existing conditions that need coverage.

If you do not have any pre existing conditions then Private plans are good (full comprehensive), it if you do, then best and safe bet is ACA.

I kept hearing healthcare.gov … is the plan offer by healthcare.gov better than COBRA ? I’m okay with cobra with its PPO plan now. Thanks.

California, like some other states, has its own ACA site, coveredca.com. We don’t use healthcare.gov. You can check out and compare plans on the site to see how they stack up against your COBRA options.

I’ve never heard anyone say that health insurance in California is cheap. It can be expensive, especially in high-cost areas like Los Angeles and San Francisco.

To find out your cost, go to the official Covered California website. Enter your estimated income and household details. Be careful to use the official site, as other sites with similar names might be confusing and ask for personal information to compare plans and prices.

Premium subsidies are federal tax credits, so they are the same across all states and based on your federal income tax when you file your returns.
