Got Billed for High-Risk OB Being Present During Twin Delivery…Is This Normal?

If your insurance covers it, you’re probably fine, but if you have out-of-pocket costs, you could call the hospital billing office and explain that you didn’t know a high-risk OB was present. They might even waive the fee.

I’d call the regular and high-risk OB offices to get more info. Sometimes, just reviewing your notes can allow them to bill for standby. Check your EOB and look for any CPT code they billed.

What’s your EOB say? If the hospital is in-network, this might be covered under the No Surprises Act.

No Surprises applies to out-of-network providers at in-network facilities. This doesn’t seem to apply here.

Being surprised by a bill doesn’t necessarily mean it qualifies for the NSA.

@Ren
No, but having an out-of-network provider bill you at an in-network hospital does.

Pretty sure NSA is for out-of-network, not just surprise bills.

The provider here is in-network. NSA doesn’t apply.

I get it—it does feel odd that they didn’t introduce the high-risk OB. For my c-section, they announced everyone in the room, which was kind of funny since it was a shift change and people kept coming in.

Start by calling your insurance to confirm coverage, then contact the high-risk OB office to see if there was a miscommunication.

When I had an emergency induction, the whole room filled up with specialists who introduced themselves even in the chaos. In a calm delivery, I’d expect that introductions would be more common.

Not sure of all the details here, but my delivery turned high-risk because of a complication. Suddenly, a whole team showed up, costing thousands, which insurance mostly covered.

Reach out to hospital billing and let them know you don’t remember seeing this doctor during delivery.
