Can short-term insurance help with high deductible costs?

I have health insurance but the deductible is $3,500 per person and the out-of-pocket maximum is around $18,000. My son is playing sports for the next few months. Is there any insurance that I can buy just for a short time that can help cover this high deductible or maybe even some of the out-of-pocket costs if he gets injured while playing?

You might want to check out accident or hospital indemnity plans. Do keep an eye on any waiting periods that might apply.

Thanks for the info - I will definitely check into those options. I usually do my own searching, but it’s just not as helpful anymore!

I second the idea of looking into accidental injury options. They can be cost-effective too. Just make sure to see if there are any exclusions for sports injuries.

Doesn’t the school provide any insurance for the athletes?

I’m not sure. We had to fill out a form indicating we need our own health insurance for the season. I can ask them about it.

Yup, Accident Insurance can fill the gaps. AFLAC is probably the most recognized option, and many local insurance agents have a couple of good plans available.

Can you get coverage for just one person through AFLAC? Most options I’ve come across seem to require coverage for the whole family, which can become expensive quickly. Now that I understand what type of insurance I need, I recall that we have a similar accident plan through my work. I need to check into how much it actually covers. It feels like it doesn’t cover much, especially since we all know the ER tends to charge around $5,000 for even the smallest injuries.
