Can I get insurance after losing coverage in February?

Hi everyone, I’m currently on my stepmom’s health insurance, but she’s removing me in February since she’s switching jobs and doesn’t plan to enroll me on her new plan. I was supposed to join my mom’s insurance, but she’s not taking the new job she was planning on, and it’s past open enrollment.

I live in New York. Is it still possible to get health insurance for 2025 without going directly through a private insurance company?

If your stepmom is switching jobs, that’s a qualifying life event, which allows you to enroll in a plan outside of the regular open enrollment period. This applies to you too, since you’ll be losing coverage.

Yes, you can still get coverage for 2025. Losing coverage is considered a qualifying life event, which opens a special enrollment period. You can also enroll now during the open enrollment period for plans starting January 1. Visit https://nystateofhealth.ny.gov/ to look at plans available in New York.

You can purchase your own coverage through the New York State of Health Marketplace. If you buy now, coverage will start on January 1. If you wait until February when you lose coverage, you’ll qualify for a special enrollment period and can sign up then. It’s a good idea to start researching options now so there’s no gap in your coverage.

Will anyone be claiming you as a dependent in 2025? This could affect what subsidies or coverage options you qualify for through the marketplace.
